A lively account of how dinosaurs became a symbol of American power and prosperity and gripped the popular imagination during the Gilded Age, when their fossil remains were collected and displayed in museums financed by North America’s wealthiest business tycoons.

Although dinosaur fossils were first found in England, a series of dramatic discoveries during the late 1800s turned North America into a world center for vertebrate paleontology. At the same time, the United States emerged as the world’s largest industrial economy, and creatures like Tyrannosaurus, Brontosaurus, and Triceratops became emblems of American capitalism. Large, fierce, and spectacular, American dinosaurs dominated the popular imagination, making front-page headlines and appearing in feature films.

Assembling the Dinosaur follows dinosaur fossils from the field to the museum and into the commercial culture of North America’s Gilded Age. Business tycoons like Andrew Carnegie and J. P. Morgan made common cause with vertebrate paleontologists to capitalize on the widespread appeal of dinosaurs, using them to project American exceptionalism back into prehistory. Learning from the show-stopping techniques of P. T. Barnum, museums exhibited dinosaurs to attract, entertain, and educate the public. By assembling the skeletons of dinosaurs into eye-catching displays, wealthy industrialists sought to cement their own reputations as generous benefactors of science, showing that modern capitalism could produce public goods in addition to profits. Behind the scenes, museums adopted corporate management practices to control the movement of dinosaur bones, restricting their circulation to influence their meaning and value in popular culture.

Tracing the entwined relationship of dinosaurs, capitalism, and culture during the Gilded Age, Lukas Rieppel reveals the outsized role these giant reptiles played during one of the most consequential periods in American history.

True Confections An Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery edition by Ruth Hartzler Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • I don't usually read Amish stories, but I made an exception for the cat on the cover. This was a good book,it made sense to me that a person mostly raised Amish might be a bit gentler, even with a cheating scum of a spouse, than a person raised in a dragon eat dragon world. I liked the bickersons - uh, bickering sisters, I figured it's their thing, and I do like a bit of grit in people as well as stories. I liked the cat, not just because he solved the mystery, but also because he was present in the story, not just a pretty cover model. OK, he looks a bit grumpy, but my last cat was a biter so I can't complain when he looks so cute. I liked the simple tone in the book, too. sometimes writing feels just simplistic, but this was sweet and genuine, it felt refreshing, not condescending. Thank you.
  • The base concept of the series is absolutely fantastic we have an Amish owned cupcake shop, two octogenarians who are obsessed with Agatha Christie, and a newly divorced former Amish lady who is starting her life anew. The writing is fun, witty, and so relatable (losing you keys, finding them, having them tossed in a litter box and then you remember you don’t even need them!).
  • A delightful new series featuring Jane Delight, a remarkable cat, and a fun array of secondary characters. I loved that the characters are older--the story begins on Jane's 50th birthday--and I found the plot intriguing. So much so that I stayed up late reading until the end. Can't wait to read the next in series. Kudos, Ruth Hartzler on another wonderfully fun and clean cozy mystery.
  • When your husband tells you, on your fiftieth birthday, he's divorcing you, marrying his soon-to-deliver twenty-something girlfriend, and leaving you without the house or spousal support, what do you do? Jane Delight heads off to live among the Amish she left years ago, work for her twin sister Rebecca in a cupcake shop, and live in the the apartment upstairs. There is a tiny hitch. She'll have roommates…two British octogenarians Eleanor and Matilda. However, Rebecca is being pressured to sell her property to Colin Greaves, a developer who will stop at nothing to acquire the property. Popping in to add more incentives to his offer, issuing veiled threats, and refusing to leave, he makes a demonstrative statement by grabbing one of the little sample cupcakes. Then gasping and collapsing…dead!

Ruth Hartzler is a new-to-me author who did very well with the traditional cozy mystery formula I enjoy. Well-written with a steady pace, she started with a likable character in whom readers can invest their time, gave them a personal challenge to send them home to family, added other characters with a couple quirky ones, threw in a conflict, a murder, and personal interest in finding justice. All very engaging leading to satisfying ending punctuated by karma. Using a first-person narrative of Jane’s perspective, I enjoyed her inner thoughts, take on living Amish, and her transformation from victim to victor. I greatly enjoyed this engaging mystery, and special treats included… easy-to-follow Amish recipes for Shoo-Fly Pie (wet bottom) Melassich Rivwelkuche and Chocolate Whoopie Pies.
  • For the Amish ways, as well as ths Englisher ways. Connecting twins, one Amish, and the other one no longer Amish...and they make a great team with friends helping to solve a mystery!
  • I read this book in one day~~even while I was cooking supper!! I won't repeat the blurb, which I did find helpful. Loved the older characters, identical twin sisters~~one Amish, the other one not~~a cupcake shop, a murder, plenty of suspects a handsome detective, and an amazing cat. Who could ask for more!!
  • I enjoyed the story very much. Really liked the characters. Surprised by the ending. Look forward to reading the next
    One. Than you
  • In True Confections I got a great cover cat who is an integral part of the story, Jane who is 50 and not Amish, her twin sister, the cupcake shop owner, 2 bickering, Agatha Christie obsessed sisters in their 80s who live above the shop and a delightful mystery. What else could I ask for? I spent a most pleasant time with this entertaining cast of characters as they "help" the police solve a murder. If you are looking for a fun mystery, try this one.

To the Edges of the Earth 1909 the Race for the Three Poles and the Climax of the Age of Exploration Edward J Larson 9780062564481 Books Reviews

  • Larson has seamlessly interwoven three tales epitomizing the concept of "masculine courage" shown by those seeking to fill in the last empty spaces on the globe as the twentieth century began. American, British, and Italian explorers submitted their bodies to excruciating torment in order to be the first to attain the "three poles" located in the harshest environments of the planet. The author's personal experience in Arctic, Antarctic, and Himalayan regions make his descriptions of their hardships come alive. Readers will be amazed by the fortitude shown by these explorers in their quests for their personal goals. Maps and photos enhance Larson's descriptive prose and document the expeditions.
  • The will power and the endurance they had
  • The title is far more exciting than the book
  • Must read for anyone inspired by exploration and the anatomy of survival. A perfect companion on a long trip into nature.
  • To the Edges of the Earth 1909, the Race for the Three Poles, and the Climax of the Age of Exploration by Edward J. Larson is an examination of the most adventurous year of all time.

1909 can be said to be the climactic year in the modern age of adventure-based exploration. The three poles to be conquered in 1909 were the North Pole, the South Pole, and the so-called Pole of Altitude in the Himalayas. (The South pole was sometimes divided into the geographic south and magnetic south poles.) The expeditions would face extraordinary difficulties, extremely harsh conditions, tremendous hardship, and death to claim the fame of being the first to plant their flags on these poles.

At the end of the year the explorers were celebrities. Americans Robert Peary and Matthew Henson were hailed as the discovers of the North Pole. Britain’s Ernest Shackleton set a new geographic "Furthest South" record. Shackleton's teammate, Australian Douglas Mawson, reached the Magnetic South Pole. "Italy’s Duke of the Abruzzi set an altitude record that would stand for a generation during his mountaineering expedition to the Himalaya's eastern Karakoram. The Duke attempted K2 and established the standard route up the most notorious mountain on the planet.

Larson points out in the preface "This book especially benefited from my participation in the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program, which allowed me to go where the Antarctic explorers went, camp where they camped, and climb where they climbed. Always traveling with others, and frequently in the company of experts, through this program I saw much of what Shackleton, Mawson, and the other early visitors to the Ross Sea region saw, from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole and summit of Mount Erebus. Extended stays at Shackleton’s Cape Royds and near Scott’s Hut Point and Cape Evans, where the explorers’ primitive winter quarters remain intact down to their unused crates of hardtack biscuits and long-frozen meat in the larder, gave insight into how the parties lived beyond what I could hope to glean from archival research."

The finished book contains notes, an index, photos, and maps. While I thought Larson did an admirable job following the three expeditions over the course of the book, my reading experience would have been greatly enhanced by the inclusion of photos and maps, which those who get the pleasure of reading the published editions will no doubt appreciate immensely.

Disclosure My review copy was courtesy of HarperCollins Publishers.
  • I received this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaway program. It was an excellent overview of the three explorations accomplished in 1909. Admiral Peary’s race to the North Pole, Ernest Shackleton’s race to the South Pole and lastly, Luigi Amedeo, the Duke of Abruzzi’s climb to the highest peak of K2 for that time.
I enjoyed reading about the challenges these brave men endured to accomplish their feats. Starvation, freezing temperatures and in Amedeo’s climb, terrifying heights were only some of these challenges. Some of their accomplishments are now disputed, but they were headline-making feats at the time. This became the last years of true exploration for our above ground world.
We still have other things to explore, other worlds, and our own seas in which we find new species every day. I liked reading about these men, this was a time when the wealthy paid or did the exploring, and the government did not get involved.
If you enjoy why men explored the unknown and how it happened, you will like this book. I highly recommend it.

Dreaming the Soul Back Home Shamanic Dreaming for Healing and Becoming Whole Robert Moss 9781608680580 Books Reviews

  • I had no idea what shamanic dreaming was before I picked up this book by spiritual writer Robert Moss, who has penned a plethora of books on dreaming. For those who are unfamiliar with shamanism, a shaman is a spiritual practitioner who has mastered the art of journeying beyond the body to communicate with spirits, guides the souls of the living and the departed, and brings them healing.

Dreaming The Soul Back Home Shamanic Dreaming for Healing and Becoming Whole introduces shamanic dreaming, or how to be your own shaman through your dreams. For shamans, a dream is a journey of the soul, a “spirit messenger.” Soul loss can happen when we suffer trauma, bitter disappointment, or violent shock. The soul then may leave the body to escape. Symptoms of this can be low energy or depression. Shamanic dreaming is a way to reclaim our soul.

The author does go through step-by-step instructions on how this can be done, but only a small part of this book is dedicated to this exact practice (there are thirteen levels of shamanic dreaming). The rest focuses on the soul journey and dreaming, including ideas from Carl Jung, the Sufis, poets of the soul like Yeats and Auden, and the power of animal spirits—ravens, owls and horses, to name a few.

Though I found the book to be incongruous in its presentation of the practice of shamanic dreaming, I also found it to be compelling read. My favorite exercises included journeying into your “Soul Tree” (where at its upper branches you can look into the future), “Secret Library” (where you can access any kind of information that interests you), and meeting “The Soul of the Soul,” (a term given by Sufis, otherwise known as your Greater Self).

“Meeting the Soul of the Soul” was my favorite chapter. Moss says this is the friend of the soul that will never lie to us, and will never judge us. It is the Self on a higher level than the ordinary self (thus the capital S!). A strong connection with this Greater Self is pivotal for healthy and peaceful living, and this chapter can show how to foster that bond.

Ultimately, Moss says that the most important knowledge comes through reclaiming what the soul knows (the timeless Sufi poets Rumi and Shams of Tabriz tirelessly repeated this maxim), and that the road to soul recovery is to take a dream and make it a gateway for a personal journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the author’s writing style, which is as lush, fluid and colorful as his ideas. His pages opened my eyes to dreaming and taught me new aspects of the soul. I started having vivid dreams myself, of butterflies, sailboats and killer whales, dreams that guided my days and enriched my nights.
  • Every time Robert Moss publishes a new book, I pre-order and devour it cover to cover. Each book sends me in new dreaming directions, and refreshes older dreamwork lessons. This one is no exception, and like his others, I will re-read to garner even more treasures.

This book is not really a book, however, but a Time Travel Machine. Using examples of his own dreams, and that of other dreamers in his circle, Moss teaches us how to connect with our younger selves, and even with past life selves. Unlike many other shamanic practitioners, Moss instructs readers with a plethora of techniques for doing this on our own. We do not need to pay large sums of money to someone else for the experience. Furthermore, he points out that the past is not necessarily linear. Perhaps our "past" lives are instead alternate realities happening right now, concurrently.

On page 148, Moss offers an exercise, to ride a Spirit Horse to the House of Gifts. His stories and instructions reminded me that I used to have a herd of invisible (to others) horses. I managed to put the book down, grab my drum, and head for the fields. Drumming, I called my horses. They came galloping across the field in my internal vision. I claimed one as my own Spirit Horse, and rode off to seek the younger Me who had ridden these horses so long ago. I found her. She did not know what to make of the adult Alice, astride a beautiful horse named Aphrodite, but was willing to join me, on another, Star.

Another day, I again drummed, and rode off in search of an Ice Age self, who had long been on the edges of my awareness. I found him, hungry and alone. I spent time with him in my wide awake dream, and later realized the energy of him had shifted and matured. I expect to be riding my Spirit Horse on many journeys from here on.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which seems to be Moss's most personal to date. I feel like I know him better, as he shares more and more of his own journey to the man he is today. Thank you, Robert.

A Courtship to Remember A Historical Regency Romance Book edition by Bridget Barton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • Elizabeth has never wanted to marry. She only wants to be left alone to pursue her music. When her father tells her she must accompany her sister to London for the season and find a husband she is devastated. If she doesn't agree, he will find one for her because she must marry on order for her younger sister to marry.
Anthony, the Baron of Bedford, proposed to Diana, the woman he has loved and devotedly courted for six years. When she rejects him and humiliates him by telling their friends how she laughed in his face and cruelly broke his heart, he decides to hide in his room and drink his humiliation away. After nearly two weeks, his best friend drags him out and forces him into London for the season.
When Elizabeth and Anthony meet at a ball, after speaking privately, Anthony devises a plan where they all get what they want. If they enter into a fake courtship, Elizabeth's father will allow her sister to marry first. Due to her extreme jealousy, Diana will return to Anthony and marry him. After her return, Anthony will reject Elizabeth and her father will not force her to marry.
As they say, the best laid plans...etc. When they begin spending time together they find they really enjoy each other's company. By the time Diana returns will their heart still want the same thing as when they started? I liked this story because it shows that the things you think you want may not be what you need for your happiness.
  • This is a delightful story about Elizabeth Ramsbury, an independent, intelligent, and talented young woman who desires for herself a career as a musician instead of the usual path of marriage. Her younger sister, Cecilia, is more typical and wanted to become engaged to her love, Percy. Their father requires them to have a Season in London to see what that opportunity will bring them.

Lord Anthony Cavendish, Baron of Bedford, wanted to marry his true love Diana Lambert, daughter of the Viscount of Somersby, but she laughs at him and embarrasses him in a painful rejection of his proposal. Anthony is devastated, so Felton Nicholson, his best friend, convinces him to go to London to take his mind off of his bad experience. He of course meets Elizabeth at the ball and they agree to a plan that could be beneficial to each. He will pretend to court her to make Diana jealous. In return for her cooperation, he will help Elizabeth with her music goals. It sounds like a well thought out plan – until things don’t happen quite as expected.

I really loved this story line and the characters were wonderful. Do they find their happy ending? Do each reach the goal that makes them truly happy? Grab your copy and enjoy!
  • I was almost dreading reading this one, as I didn’t even finish Ms Barton’s last book. Usually I enjoy her stories, but I got so impatient over the silliness of the heroine in “A Charming Lady...” that I gave up with a shrug. This one, however, is back to her usual style Elizabeth is intelligent, charming and natural; Anthony , though a bit of a schmuck in wanting his selfish and hateful old love back, is sweet tempered and kindly. Their decision to enter into a false courtship in order to incite the woman who jilted Anthony to jealousy and to get Elizabeth’s father off her back regarding marriage wasn’t as implausibly written as that scenario often appears in other books. Of course, the couple doesn’t see for a while what the reader can see instantly...the perfect match in the making!

Only two criticisms. One is that Elizabeth was seen as beneath Anthony in station since her father held no title, but in actuality the title of Baron was not so high that anyone would see his marriage to the daughter of landed gentry as unusual. Landed gentry were NOT considered commoners. The second fault was that the extended epilogue was not really necessary and added little to the story. In fact, I found the new relationship between Elizabeth’s parents, who had disliked each other for 20 years, to be the only improbable slice of the book pie. All in all, a nice and enjoyable story about two nice and enjoyable young people finding happiness with each other.
  • A Courtship to Remember is a good title but I found this book so tedious and repetitious I barely was able to plow through it. It was as if the author had a list of every Regency cliché, spread them liberally, and moved on to modern ones. The grammar errors were not many and probably not glaring except to the members of the Grammar Police. Since I'm a card-carrying member of the force, they stood out to me. This book has little to recommend it, unless one needs something to read in case of insomnia.
  • Elizabeth loved music and playing on the 🎹 pianoforte!
She doesn't believe that marriage would make her happy
because she feels men would never support her love of
    🎶music.

Then she meets Anthony and everything changed. They
strike up a plan and follow through with it. What plan is
    it and does it work?

This is absolutely the most amazing, excellent book! The
characters are incredible and so complex. I positively loved
The way Anthony treated Elizabeth and her sister's boyfriend
treated her. They weren't 😨afraid to show how important
    these sisters were to them!

They helped them with everything, others looked down on
Then but they didn't care. These women were treated like
a precious 💎gem. They loved them dearly!

Oh don't forget to get the Extended Epilogue, it is as awesome
as the book! I highly recommend that you get this book!

I absolutely hate that we have to get out of the book in order to
get the Extended Epilogues! It is ridiculous, I pray the people
Who do this changes their way of doing this! Put the Extended
Epilogues at the very end of the books 📚. That way when we
Re-read or listen to it again we get the Extended Epilogue with it!

From the author of the New York Times #1 bestseller The Untethered Soul comes the astonishing true-life story about what happens when you just let go.

• A thriving spiritual community on over six hundred acres of pristine forest and meadows in Florida
• A cutting-edge software package that transformed the medical practice management industry
• A billion-dollar public company whose achievements are archived in the Smithsonian Institution
• A book that became a New York Times bestseller and an Oprah favorite
• A massive raid by the FBI that would lead to unfounded accusations by the U.S. government

How could all of this spring from a man who had decided to live alone in the middle of the woods, let go of himself, and embrace a life of solitude?

Michael A. Singer, author of The Untethered Soul, tells the extraordinary story of what happened when, after a deep spiritual awakening, he decided to let go of his personal preferences and simply let life call the shots. As Singer takes you on this great experiment and journey into life’s perfection, the events that transpire will both challenge your deepest assumptions about life and inspire you to look at your own life in a radically different way.

The Surrender Experiment is now a New York Times bestseller!

"First I should say I'm a lover of Michael's first book "The Untethered Soul" which radically transformed my life, so I pre-ordered this one and anxiously awaited. Before I got the book, I wasn't sure if I'd totally buy into the premise of "complete surrender" because I'm more in the arena of "you create your own reality" not to mention believing in parallel universes etc. etc.

Michael's book is a totally different angle - life just happens, don't try to figure out why and how it's happening, you're not doing any of it, just follow life, and it'll be just fine. So with great intrigue I was looking forward to reading it. Even though I knew his perspective on life was different than mine, I do believe in surrender - meaning it's fine to envision something but then completely let go and allow the Universe to do its thing. So even if I used Michael's viewpoint in that way, I was open to hearing what he had to share on the topic of surrendering.

By the way, some chapters ended with such an incredible promise of what will unfold next that you just had to keep reading. I told my son, "OK, leave me alone. I'll be in the sunroom for 5 hours - not getting up until this book is done!" I was up until after 1am, but it was done. I got both the audio book (read by the author) and the paperback.

UNTETHERED SOUL VS SURRENDER EXPERIMENT
Untethered Soul freed me from the chatter of my mind. Although I had been familiar with the concepts of not allowing your thoughts to control you, Michael Singer explained it so radically clear, that my own transformation came via the Untethered Soul. Or so I thought. I might need to go back and re-read Untethered Soul because The Surrender Experiment was mind-blowing.

To me, Untethered Soul was the message of "You are NOT your thoughts AND.... you don't have to just blindly follow your thoughts." Surrender Experiment, however, took that concept quite a bit further. Surrender Experiment was more about "What if you went ahead and did the very thing your thoughts made you fearful or resistant about doing?" and instead saw those opportunities as Life delivering to you your next task/action/decision. I had MANY jaw-dropping moments witnessing JUST how far Michael took that concept. Freakin' mind-blowing! Surrender Experiment was somewhat of a personal demonstration of what was taught in Untethered Soul and then some - totally riveting.

INITIAL REACTIONS
The first couple "life delivered" stories he shared, I was kinda like "Eh, that's nice but really not that extraordinary." (but not to worry that changed as I continued reading!)

My other initial reaction was toward the beginning of the book when I read one of the first stories of how he did NOT give into the chattering resistance of his mind. My reaction was "What?!!! That's nuts! Crap, there's no way I'd give in to a situation like that!" In rebellion, I shut the book and walked away feeling uncertain that I'd wanna keep reading... 30min later I feel drawn in.

I reminded myself that I can read any book and decide to use what resonates and discard what does not. Well hey, at least that perspective got me reading it again. SO freakin' glad I did!! (although I'll admit my reaction of "No way! He did NOT just allow that to happen!" re-occurred as I continued reading the book - see "is resistance holding me back" below)

WHAT I REALLY ENJOYED

Surrender when you feel resistance. (Chp 30):
This made VERY aware of just how many thoughts of RESISTANCE crossed my mind. Untethered Soul made me aware of the constant chatter, but Surrender Experiment made me acutely aware of thoughts of RESISTANCE which was truly transformative. Through the stories of his own thoughts of resistance I became aware of my own... painfully aware of my own (in a good way).

Refusing income:
Initially he refused to be paid by someone who was insisting to pay him. Sounds like he had that "too spiritual to receive payment" concept going on - a lot of "spiritual" people experience that so it was good to watch that play out in Michael's life. He admitted that he undercharged for his services quite a bit. That refusal to be paid was a form of mental resistance that he overcame later - clearly he shed resistance to accepting money given the millions he experienced in his companies.

Mental concept separating worldly and spiritual dissolves:
It was cool to witness the dissolving of his concepts "separating worldly and spiritual" as he puts it. For anyone who thinks spirituality is meditating, finding as much isolation as you can, and doing a whole bunch of spiritual practices, get ready to have your perspective shifted a bit. Michael found a way to merge deep spirituality while making millions. In fact, his spirituality deepened as a result of his many "worldly" encounters. He shows you how his spirituality deepened DURING his worldly encounters. What's more is that he often credits his everyday experiences in life and business with deepening his spirituality MORE than meditation and isolation. Truly dumbfounded by how it effortlessly came together.

Also, most people who think about being in a spiritual community, are often doing so to escape dealing the "worldly drama" or "non-spirituality" of regular life and to be surrounded only by like-minded people. That's the way Michael Singer started out as well - alone out in the woods. But somehow he merged living in his spiritual community with the experiences of running businesses etc. FROM that very reclusive spiritual community. And he did so with uniquely remarkable life-changing results.... merely by surrendering to events of his life.

Is resistance holding ME back:
Many times, Michael surrendered to a life situation that seemed utterly ridiculous to surrender to and the voice in my head said "You have GOT to be kidding me!!! Why would you just give in to that?!" Someone builds a house on YOUR land without asking you.... an irate customer demands you pull your workmen off one job and come do hers immediately. Just say OK to both??!! Huh??!! Are you kidding me right now??!!

Then.... the rest of the story unfolds and life not only fully supports him but over delivers leaving me shaking my head with a smile realizing the gem this book really is. I know it sounds ridiculous but ya gotta read the book to really get this folks... ya just gotta read the book. I can't even explain it here. Truly....

By chapter 34 my resistance to this level of surrender was overtaken by fascination with what may actually be possible that I have not yet tapped into. (yes it took me THIRTY-FOUR chapters to start feeling a great deal of acceptance to what he was saying). :) Suddenly I'm realizing that my own mental/internal resistance to change (and to what life put in front of me) probably had me turn down more opportunities in my life than I could ever count because the voice in my head resisted it in some way. My personal preferences won most of the time disallowing the natural flow of life. Wow, I see this SO clearly now! Unreal.

Life hands you the next task:
Loved this quote "I'm sitting on a tiny planet spinning in out of space and this is the next task that life handed to me. I'm doing this as a gift to the Universe." Shifted my perspective quite radically especially considering certain events occurring my life right now, and the many events I disallowed in the past.

Follow your Bliss:
Although the book doesn't specifically say "follow your bliss" Michael was a living example of precisely that in many instances. He just allowed himself to fall in love with whatever he felt passionate about and lo and behold life threw him all kinds of opportunities that lined up with precisely that. It's an awesome reminder that the Universe will support you in your passion. Often times, we don't believe that we can make money with our passion so we go do something else. Pay very close attention to how that multi-million software company got started - THAT was an incredible display of "follow your bliss" supported by the Universe a million fold.

Awesome Intuitive flow
I loved reading about the beautiful resonant inner flow of creativity Michael experienced where things just flowed out of him - clearly from an amazingly inspired place that delivered projects so effortlessly that it was pretty much like meditating. Really opened me up to experiencing more of this flow and reading how he got into the flow was cool as well.

Is this about the "Art of Allowing?"
OK I know the author probably is NOT into the Law of Attraction. BUT.... at some point I became aware that Michael Singer was remaining in a "state of allowing" that a lot of "Law of Attraction" people talk, preach about, and write books about, and do seminars about but don't really know how to experience. In a way, THIS book is the "art of allowing" LIVED (not just preached).... but that's just my perspective.

Learning to quiet or ignore the voice in his head also provided a tremendous a level of peace in tumultuous situations. Loved how he demonstrated just how easy it is to do that. I followed his guidance and immediately was able to practice the feeling of calm and serenity in any given moment. Very cool. That very peace, is ALSO allowing the law of attraction to work in his favor (I think.) Many people try to "do things" to attract desired experiences never once realizing that attracting is a BEING experience (not a doing one). Michael Singer fully surrenders, experiences tremendous peace and joy in life, and (of course) naturally attracts amazing life experiences (that he did NOT ever envision, set an intention for, asked the Universe for or make a vision board for I might add). Mmm hmm.... there's more than ONE way to live this thing called life folks.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS & PONDERINGS

What about a combo of desire plus surrender:
Michael's teachings are all about "Surrender your preferences and just follow the stream of naturally occurring life events." And to his credit, he presents a mountain of evidence as to how well this has worked for him. That said, other authors (like Trevor Blake multi-million dollar author of Three Simple Steps and also the book Parallel Realities of Self) embraces the combo of "desire/preferences + surrender."

Personally, I see nothing inherently wrong with having desires and preferences for different life experiences - just don't think your puny little human mind has a better plan than the Universe - dream, envision, then fully surrender to the magic of the Universe. I'd say Michael's book both expanded my view and instantly influenced my experience of the surrender/allowing part.

Always do what life puts in front of you?
At a certain point in the book, he shared that he chose to NOT accept different biz opportunities so as to not sacrifice his meditation practice. But he also says "do what life puts in front of you." I felt a bit conflicted in reading that as life was putting lots of biz opportunities in front of him but he went with his preference for his twice-daily meditation practice, but hey, no big deal... I still love this book. :)

There was also the time when a colleague was impressing upon Michael to build a bigger house for himself on the land he owned. In previous stories where others were impressing upon him to do something, he took it as a "sign from life" and surrendered. But when his colleague was impressing upon him to build a nicer house for himself, he said no, he'll just wait for the timing of life (which he did with remarkable results) but still... I wondered.... that whole surrender and preferences thing isn't so black and white is it?

Do what life puts in front of you even if you really don't enjoy it?
Here's the thing... what's working in Michael's favor is that he fully BELIEVES that the Universe will support him no matter what. That unwavering belief is a big part the magic in all of this (see my overall comment below). So at times, he says "yes" to opportunities he really does NOT want to do. That left me a bit concerned for readers who may blindly throw themselves into situations they despise which will then create very undesired life experiences.

Remember, Michael did NOT allow himself to feel "despise" for any of the things he accepted but initially felt dislike for. THAT's the key and it created amazing results for Michael. If you cannot follow that ability to turn "initial dislike" into "full positive love and acceptance" for things you really don't wanna do, then you may not wanna blindly follow what Michael's doing in this book. (again... see my overall comment below). Personally, I believe the Universe has infinite opportunities available for us all to experience and it's much more fun for me to align with the manifestation of enjoyable ones, so I choose to do that. :)

Is this all just too perfect?
At times, after reading one life event after another that miraculously turned out just fine, I found myself wondering if this is just almost too perfect. The book is doing an awesome job of articulating a series of selected events that were perfectly timed and that worked out beautifully each time. BUT.... any stories of following whatever life brought to you only to have it blow up in your face? Surely that MUST have happened a few times in 40 years.

Can't help but wonder... were there other events occurring that did not go so well. Quite a few staff members were divinely timed hires. Certainly not all hired employees showed up effortlessly and perfectly timed (for example). Yes, there was the FBI raid where all hell seemed to break loose.... but my mind wondered.... did Michael feel like the employee (who was taking kickbacks) was an effortless and divinely timed hire when that employee showed up? But to be fair, there were other stories of "things seemingly gone wrong... then turned out just fine."

Michael says the growth of the company was astonishing and with it came all the problems associated with a rapidly growing technology company. But doesn't quite say how those typical problems were experienced. Were they all experienced with effortless serendipity? Or was it the typical corporate drama.

Wait, there WERE some preferences expressed:
The book seems to be heavily embracing the "surrender all of your preferences" concept but there were times when I thought "Well isn't THAT a preference?" For example, why NOT simply surrender to the trees being cut down (Ch 38) vs attempting to preserve it which is what Michael did. Why not say "Hey, so trees are being chopped down in our beautiful neighboring surroundings... life just delivered that so I'll just accept it." Nope, Michael had a preference for saving the trees and leased the land to save them. Scratched my head on that one as it seemed like a clear desire/preference to me. The outcome from leasing the land was pretty cool but still.... I wondered.

Mind vs Spirit/Intuition talking
He talks about not listening to the resistant chatter going on in your mind, but what about being guided by the Spirit within to NOT do something? The book didn't address intuitively NOT doing something. It was either focused on not listening to the mind or not resisting whatever life put in front of you. Perhaps he perceives NOT listening to the mind as, by default, listening to your Spirit/intuition? If you're just being the observer of your thoughts, then by default you are indeed following the Spirit? Not sure, but I was left wondering about that as the concept of intuition wasn't addressed (except for the intuitive flow of inspiration in completing projects).

Merge this with Law of Attraction maybe?
Perhaps the Law of Attraction that many Spiritual/new-age people are trying to "master" or "use" isn't as complicated as we make it. ALSO, to fly in the face of what this book is about, MAYBE... just MAYBE.... one can indeed envision preferences and desires, then promptly move your daggone butt out of the way, surrendering to the natural flow of whatever shows up, expecting no particular outcome and remaining completely unattached. I say MAYBE.... yet I'm aware there's plenty of evidence of this being true (e.g. Three Simple Steps by Trevor Blake or Parallel Realities of Self by Frederick Dodson, and a bazillion other authors).

OVERALL
Amazing book! A totally riveting page-turner! Five stars all the way! Another masterpiece delivered by Michael Singer and I am SO glad I bought both the paper-back and the audio version. I read them both together - kinda like Michael reading it to me (cool that this audiobook was read by him - Untethered Soul audiobook was not read by him but it was still awesomely read).

The powerful stories in this book almost... ALMOST... made me second-guess my belief in "you create your own reality." But alas, once the last chapter was read, I realized I have my own slew of stories to support creating my own reality and so do others who do not follow the "surrender all your preferences." teaching (again e.g. Three Simple Steps by Trevor Blake or Parallel Realities of Self by Frederick Dodson). It's awesome reading books like The Surrender Experiment however, because you get clear validation that there is indeed more than one way to dance to the music of life and experience amazing results.

Ever wondered how authors can provide such amazing supporting evidence of their very different teachings/beliefs? Easy peasy... it's Universal Law - that which you believe must become your reality. Michael Singer believes in "surrender your preferences and life will support you" and that became his reality. Trevor Blake believes in "set your intentions then let go and allow the Universe to do it's magic" and that became his reality. Frederick Dodson believes in "get clear on what you want, shift into that parallel reality and you'll experience it" and magically, that became his reality. It's Universal Law at work - whatever you firmly believe will happen MUST therefore become your reality (even bad stuff I might add - be careful!). So just choose your preferred "awesome sauce" recipe that resonates and flow with it. We are THAT powerful as creators of our own human experiences - makes life very cool I think, don't you? :)

As I said WAY back in the beginning of this review, I take what resonates and discard what does not when it comes to *any* spiritual teacher. Love Michael Singer's work a whole lot, yet I believe we're each here to have our own unique life experiences on this earthly ride. At the end of anyone's "spiritual teachings" remember to pause, lay aside the excitement of discovering something new, take a breather, then go within... meditate.... get quiet enough to access your OWN inner compass/guidance, your own intuition, the Spirit within you.... to see what aspects of that new teaching was actually meant for YOU at this time.

For me, my own life experiment will be a merger of expressing my desires to the Universe AND (thanks to Michael) surrendering a whole lot more to whatever shows up. Different than Michael for sure... and we'll see where that little experiment takes me. Hey, life is a playground and I'm gonna play it any way I like darnit! :)

Really loooooong review. BUT... hope it was helpful to you my fellow Amazon browsers and spiritual seekers! :)"

(Chp 30)

    Refusing income
Initially he refused to be paid by someone who was insisting to pay him. Sounds like he had that "too spiritual to receive payment" concept going on - a lot of "spiritual" people experience that so it was good to watch that play out in Michael's life. He admitted that he undercharged for his services quite a bit. That refusal to be paid was a form of mental resistance that he overcame later - clearly he shed resistance to accepting money given the millions he experienced in his companies.

Mental concept separating worldly and spiritual dissolves

    Is resistance holding ME back
Many times, Michael surrendered to a life situation that seemed utterly ridiculous to surrender to and the voice in my head said "You have GOT to be kidding me!!!

(yes it took me THIRTY-FOUR chapters to start feeling a great deal of acceptance to what he was saying). ) Suddenly I'm realizing that my own mental/internal resistance to change (and to what life put in front of me) probably had me turn down more opportunities in my life than I could ever count because the voice in my head resisted it in some way. My personal preferences won most of the time disallowing the natural flow of life. Wow, I see this SO clearly now! Unreal.

Life hands you the next task
Loved this quote "I'm sitting on a tiny planet spinning in out of space and this is the next task that life handed to me. I'm doing this as a gift to the Universe." Shifted my perspective quite radically especially considering certain events occurring my life right now, and the many events I disallowed in the past.

    Follow your Bliss

What about a combo of desire plus surrender

I still love this book. )

Personally, I believe the Universe has infinite opportunities available for us all to experience and it's much more fun for me to align with the manifestation of enjoyable ones, so I choose to do that. )

Wait, there WERE some preferences expressed

We are THAT powerful as creators of our own human experiences - makes life very cool I think, don't you? )

Hey, life is a playground and I'm gonna play it any way I like darnit! )

Really loooooong review. BUT... hope it was helpful to you my fellow browsers and spiritual seekers! )
  • First, like many others here, I really appreciated the wisdom of The Untethered Soul. I haven't found any better source that expresses what spiritual knowingness is about for there it is, in very plain language.

Second, not knowing anything about Michael Singer's life, I was amazed at his life story. It is fascinating, as Singer expresses in his book, how life moves "this way" then "that way" with no idea why it's going that way. It just happens. The book can also be read on different levels, for business types as well. There were gaps in the story which left me baffled, most prominently, what of his relationship to his wife and child? Mentioned in but a few sentences then disappeared.

After I read the last chapter of the book, though, I was disappointed and it took me a couple of days to ruminate over what it was that bothered me. Then it came his book, and his life story, missed an opportunity to teach and to explore what "surrender" is in its full context. The general context of his surrender stories in his autobiography involve coming up against something which he personally dislikes, but he, in his own way, surrenders to the dislike, and something "positive" opens up on the other side, which naturally enlightens his soul and enriches his life. What concerns me is that the reader could interpret this scenario as the only means and particularly, the correct outcome, of surrender. It is a sort of prosperity gospel that if one surrenders to one's life, good things will happen to you. The teaching moment I feel that is missing in this book is that, "This is how surrender expressed itself in my life, but it may not happen to you the same way." An addendum to that message would be, "Yes, I went from being a hippie living on only $5000/yr. and I became a CEO of a corporation and a millionaire, but guess what, it's nothing special, it's just how life showed up. It's no better, or more important, or more valuable than anyone else's life story. Surrender happens in many ways and in many forms."

Surrender does come in many forms. Sometimes it comes with years of great pain, sorrow, and heartache. Sometimes even death. In fact Christianity centers around an individual who is an extreme example of this. For Jesus, surrender came in the form of ridicule, hatred, and his eventual horrific death in his early 30's.

Furthermore, what does surrender look like to someone who is in an abusive relationship or a parent whose innocent child is killed in a drive-by shooting. Surrender in these situations is much more than simply allowing a dislike.

Or even, can someone be so very ordinary with no outstanding achievements, wealth, or spiritual accolades of any sort be spiritually enlightened having surrendered to his/her life?

So, to me, I think the book can lead others to misunderstand surrender and to interpret Michael's story as the story that "should" happen in their own life. I would given a much higher grade if, after his own story, he would have included a chapter or so discussing what surrender means. Without that chapter, the book diminishes down to a life story of one man.

The Untethered Soul starts with, "To thy own self be true." That is the only place surrender makes sense.
