The Don Con edition by Richard Armstrong Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
- I wonder how it's possible to write such a tight story. The characters are so richly developed I feel as if I've known them for years. Classic Armstrong. Every plot line, every hint of foreshadowing, every allusion is paid off in a way that is satisfying... but in a completely unpredictable way.
The tension is maintained all the way to the final paragraph with Tarantino-like skill.
And to top it off, the climax is an unexpected "Batman gambit," which is ironic, considering the roll superheroes play in the story.
I'm a huge fan of Richard's previous book God Doesn't Shoot Craps, so I had high expectations going into this book.
The Don Con far surpassed those expectations.
Thank you, Richard, for such an incredible read.
(I may have blown a project deadline or two because I simply couldn't put this book down.) - Having totally enjoyed Richard Armstrong’s previous novel “God Doesn’t Shoot Craps†I didn’t think he could get any better. Wow, was I wrong!
“The Don Con†was a fantastic read. The plot well thought out, characters extremely well developed and an excellent ending.
I can hardly wait for this Authors next book.
For a fast passed fun novel I totally recommend “The Don Conâ€. - “The Don Con†is a terrific read. The premise is ingenious and original. It’s well plotted, fast paced, with vivid characters, great dialogue, and humorous touches. The phrase “page turner†has become a cliché, but it really applies to this captivating novel.
My sole reservation? Certain scenes and events struck me as over the top, straining credibility. True, that may be inevitable in a thriller with schemes and intrigues that rival “Mission Impossible.†But a few tweaks might have made the more far-fetched elements plausible, sparing the reader from having to suspend disbelief.
Still, this is a minor objection. Get “The Don Con†… and be sure set aside a few hours, because you won’t be able to stop reading. Take it from a Don! - An entertaining story, well told. I really got a kick out of Joey V and his back story, which is very reminiscent of someone I know. A lot of research went into creating the characters, the situations, and the dialogue. I especially liked the liberal sprinkling of Shakespeare throughout the book. Added so much to the actors' characters, and provided a lot of comic relief, to boot. My only regret is that I blew through it so fast. I will pick it up again to savor the various scenes again and the evocative writing. Well done.
- Richard Armstrong has taken the classic caper story and infused it with his own charm and wit. It's a delightful romp that combines gangsters, fan culture, and the entertainment industry in a sparkling tale of revenge. You come to really care for the characters, even the morally bankrupt ones. It grabs you from the first sentence and holds you in a velvet grip to the end—and you'll adore every minute of it.
- I enjoy a book that makes me want to know its author. I assume that he or she would be as enjoyable a companion as the story. Full disclosure I know the author of The Don Con and the “art†of his life is contained in this fun book. It is full of imaginative wit, humor, charm, slings and arrows, joie de vivre, and love. I also know a book to be good when I wish it were longer. As I read the last paragraph of TDC, I smiled, and turned to the first page to read it again.
- The best novels introduce you to a world you never knew about through winning characters and clever plots. That’s exactly what "The Don Con" accomplishes. It’s a crime book peppered with literary allusions and insights into the curious world of fan conventions. The writing is crisp and witty. If you are looking for a book you can’t put down, pick this one up!
- The Don Con was a fun read. It was fast paced and the story line kept you going. The ending was GREAT! All you could hope for in a book!
